Torque of the North - November 2021

Austin Healey Club Northern Centre's Newsletter

Hi,

Welcome to Novembers’ newsletter, we’ve held back this issue until we have the report from the AGM, held on the North Wales Sub-Centre turf in Pulford, near Chester, but more of that later.  This month we’ve news of some of the last events before we winter the cars and with an eye on Christmas events being organised.

AGM Northern Centre 2nd November 2021
I’ve listed below the changes to the committee, some old friends and fresh faces!
  • Paul Johnson who stood down as Chairman of the centre after 5 years but remains on the committee as Vice Chairman with a particular responsibility for the May Bank Holiday events.
  • Mike Stonier who stood down as Centre Director but remains on the committee as Events Coordinator and rep for the Northwest.
  • Doug McClymont has taken on the Chairman’s role, as well as representing the Northern Centre at the NEC as Centre Director.
  • Tony Curran who retires from the committee having held many of the posts over a very long period of time during which he organised many very large and successful national and international events and capped with a term as Chairman of the National Club,
  • Donald Gordon who retires from the committee as the Scottish Sub Centre Rep - a role that he has held for as long as anyone in the club can remember.  Ian Walker joins the committee this year as the rep for the Scottish Sub-Centre, filling Donald’s shoes.
  • Jeff Hollinshead who remains as the Yorkshire rep but also takes on the responsibility for Membership, from Doug, across the Northern Centre,
  • A big welcome to Trevor Gammage who joins the committee as a general member.
  • All the re-elected members of the committee who have kindly agreed to serve another year on the committee in their current role:  Phil Kershaw, Jonathan Pilkington, Robert Thornburrow, John & Jill Bowman and John Stangers-Leathes.
  • In addition, thanks were given to: John Ridyard  Valuations Officer & Dave Sinclair Technical Adviser and to Mike Rasmussen who has successfully got a group of drivers going up in the North East.

Yorkshires “Last of The Summer Drive”
Twenty-one members met on Sunday 3rd October at The Motorist, Sherburn in Elmet (the site of the old Mintex Brakes test track) for The Yorkshire Sub-Centre's Last of The Summer Drive. The venue is an all new motoring themed garage, showroom, cafe and open-air cinema.  The venue was not only the meeting point for our nine Austin Healey's, plus Stag and daily drivers, but a James Bond themed Aston Martin gathering.  Breakfast butties and drinks were served outside from a converted 1960's Bedford RL Army Truck.

New member Roger Brook kindly led us off on the prescribed route, as he was local to the first part of the drive and conversant with the route to the topside of York. John Gaunt then took over as the lead on superb roads through beautiful villages and outstanding scenery on the edge of The North York Moors to The Angel. Here we enjoyed a warm welcome and a good lunch before making our various ways home.
